Do You Provide Steel Samples?
Steel samples are normal in export trade, and the real question is less whether a sample exists than what form it takes and who carries the cost. A sample can be a cut piece of section, a short length of pipe, a small plate, or simply the mill test certificate for the heat the order comes from – and each is arranged differently.
Short answer
Samples of steel are commonly available for an enquiry, and the usual route is to confirm the arrangement rather than assume it: which product and size is sampled, whether the sample is free or charged, whether the cost is credited against the order, and who pays the courier. All of this varies by product and by the size of the enquiry, so it is settled at quotation. Where the question is specification rather than appearance, the mill test certificate does the work without any steel moving.
Why the form of the sample matters
A sample is worth most when it answers the question the buyer has. A buyer checking a galvanized finish needs a coated piece, not a bare one; a buyer checking that a section matches the drawing needs a dimensional sample, or the drawing and a certificate. A buyer who only wants to hold the material gets more from a certificate and a third-party inspection than from a sample.
How sample arrangements usually work
- Sample form – a cut length of tube, section or bar; a small plate; or the mill test certificate for the producing heat
- Sample cost – small common sizes are often supplied free of charge, while cut-to-size or specially produced pieces are normally charged
- Credit against the order – where a charged sample precedes an order, the cost is often credited against the order rather than lost
- Courier – sample freight is usually arranged at the buyer’s account, because a sample moves faster than the order
- Time – a sample from stock moves quickly, while a sample cut from a fresh heat moves with the production it belongs to
Sample terms, sample freight and any credit against an order are agreed for the product concerned at quotation.
What to settle in the enquiry
A sample enquiry is settled by four points:
- The product, the size and the finish, so the sample is the material and not an approximation
- What the sample has to prove – appearance, dimension, coating or specification
- The quantity and the destination, since the sample arrangement and freight follow from them
- Whether a test certificate or a third-party inspection would serve the purpose better than a physical piece

Frequently asked questions
Do you provide steel samples?
Sample arrangements are confirmed at enquiry, because they depend on the product, the size and the finish. Steel samples are commonly supplied as a cut piece, a short length or a small plate, and the terms – whether the sample is charged, whether the cost is credited against an order, and who pays the courier – are settled at quotation.
Are steel samples free?
Sometimes. Small common sizes are often supplied free of charge, while cut-to-size or specially produced pieces are normally charged; where a charged sample leads to an order, the cost is often credited against the order. The position is confirmed per product at enquiry.
What can a steel sample prove?
It can prove appearance, finish and dimension, and lets the buyer handle the material. What it cannot prove alone is the chemistry or the mechanical result of the production heat, which is why a mill test certificate or a third-party inspection is used for specification.
Can a certificate be used instead of a steel sample?
Often. Where the question is specification rather than appearance, the mill test certificate for the producing heat, commonly in the EN 10204 3.1 format, is quicker and cheaper to arrange than a physical sample.
Send the product, the size, the finish and the destination port, and the sample and the offer are worked against those points. See the steel product catalogue, how orders are inspected and certified, or request a quotation.
