Steel Pipe & Tube Weight Calculator
Enter the outside diameter (or side length) and the wall thickness, and this calculator returns the
theoretical weight per metre, per length and for your full order quantity.
It covers round pipe and square / rectangular hollow sections — the two families our mill
supplies most often. All figures use the standard steel density of 7.85 g/cm³.

How the calculation works
Steel pipe weight is worked out from the cross-sectional area of the wall multiplied by the density of steel.
For a round pipe the wall area is the difference between the outside circle and the inside circle; for a
hollow section it is the perimeter of the mid-line multiplied by the wall thickness.
W = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466OD = outside diameter, t = wall thickness, result in kg/m
W = ((A + B) × 2 ÷ 3.14 − t) × t × 0.02466A, B = outside sides, t = wall thickness, result in kg/m
The constant 0.02466 comes from the density of carbon steel (7.85 g/cm³) divided by 1,000
(π × 7.85 ÷ 1,000). Values are theoretical weights: the actual weight of a consignment
depends on mill tolerances, so use these figures for estimating freight and planning only, and take the
weight stated on the mill test certificate as final. Thickness is always the nominal wall thickness.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the calculated weight different from the weight on my invoice?
Because this is a theoretical figure. Real pipe is rolled to a tolerance — the wall may be slightly
thicker or thinner than nominal — so the weight on the mill test certificate and on the packing list
is the weight you are invoiced for. For most consignments the two agree within a few per cent, which is
close enough for estimating container loading and freight.
Can I use this calculator for stainless steel or galvanised pipe?
Use it for carbon steel. Stainless steel is denser (about 7.93–8.00 g/cm³ depending on grade), so
stainless pipe weighs roughly 1–2 per cent more than the figure shown. Hot-dip galvanising adds a zinc
layer that is normally ignored in trade calculations; if you need the coated weight, tell us the zinc
coating weight and we will work it out for you.
Which sizes can you actually supply?
Round pipe from 21.3 mm to 168.3 mm outside diameter, and square or rectangular hollow
sections from 20 × 20 mm to 150 × 150 mm, in the wall thicknesses shown above. Other sizes,
lengths and cut-to-length orders are produced to order — send us the specification and we will confirm
availability and lead time.
Do you supply cut-to-length, and what is your minimum order?
Yes. Standard delivery lengths are 6 m and 12 m, and we cut to your drawing or cutting list on
request. Trial orders start from one tonne for stock sizes; mixed loads combining several sizes are
welcome.
Need a price for a specific size?
