What Does an EN 10204 3.1 Certificate Mean?

An EN 10204 3.1 certificate is an inspection certificate issued by the producing mill’s inspection department, reporting the actual test results for the heat that made your steel. It is the standard documentary evidence of quality for structural and pressure steel, and it is different from both a certificate of conformity and a 3.2 certificate.

The main certificate types

Type Who issues it What it contains
2.2 The manufacturer A declaration of compliance with the order, without test results
3.1 The mill’s own inspection department Actual test results for the heat, independent of the production department
3.2 The mill plus an independent inspection body The same test results, verified and signed by a third party

Why buyers ask for 3.1

Because it converts a claim into evidence. The certificate reports real chemical and mechanical values for a traceable heat, so a third party can check them against the standard. That traceability is what makes the certificate usable in an inspection or a claim.

What to check on a 3.1 certificate

  1. It is issued by the mill, not by a trader
  2. The standard and grade match your purchase order
  3. The heat number matches the goods and the other documents
  4. The reported values fall within the limits for the grade
  5. The certificate is signed and identifiable, not a generic template

Frequently asked questions

What is EN 10204 3.1?

It is an inspection certificate issued by the producing mill’s own inspection department, reporting the actual test results for the heat. It is independent of the production department, which is what makes it credible evidence.

What is the difference between 3.1 and 3.2?

A 3.1 certificate is issued by the mill’s inspection department. A 3.2 certificate carries the same test results but is also verified and signed by an independent inspection body.

Do I need a 3.1 certificate?

For structural and pressure applications it is the normal requirement. For non-critical, non-certified use a lighter document may be acceptable, so state the requirement in the order.
