What Is ERW Pipe? Full Form, Meaning and Uses
ERW stands for Electric Resistance Welded. The abbreviation describes how the pipe was made, not what it is made of and not what it can carry. Buyers meet it in specifications, mill certificates and offers, so it is worth knowing exactly what the three letters commit a supplier to — and what they leave open.
What the name covers
The full form is Electric Resistance Welded pipe. A strip or coil of steel is formed into a cylinder and the two edges are joined by passing a high-frequency current through them: the resistance at the joint generates the heat, and the edges are pressed together without filler metal. That is the whole of the definition.
- It says nothing about the steel grade — that comes from a separate standard and certificate.
- It says nothing about the wall thickness, the end finish or the coating.
- It says nothing about pressure rating; that follows from the product standard the pipe is made to.
Is ERW pipe seamless?
No. ERW pipe has a longitudinal weld seam, so it belongs to the welded family. That single fact is what most enquiries are really asking about, because the seam is the feature that decides whether ERW is acceptable for a given duty.
A properly made and tested ERW pipe is a sound pressure-containing product, and it dominates water, gas distribution and general structural tube for that reason. Where the service demands a seam-free wall, the specification has to call for seamless or for a submerged-arc welded product, and the certificate has to say so. How the three welded routes differ is set out in ERW vs LSAW vs SSAW pipe.
What ERW pipe is used for
| Application | Why ERW suits it |
|---|---|
| Water and gas lines | Consistent wall, tight dimensional control, long lengths, economical at volume |
| Structural and mechanical tube | Square, rectangular and round hollow sections are almost all welded |
| Fencing, furniture and general fabrication | Straight, uniform and easy to cut, bend and weld |
| Low and medium pressure service pipe | Acceptable where the product standard and testing regime allow |
The limits are set by the standard, not by the abbreviation. A pipeline specification that requires a particular weld inspection, a hydrostatic test or a restricted chemistry is asking for a product standard; asking for “ERW” alone does not satisfy it.
How to write it on an enquiry
Five items turn a vague request into a comparable one:
- The product standard and grade, with the edition — this is the item that carries the real requirements.
- Size and wall thickness, in the units the standard uses.
- End finish: plain, bevelled, threaded or grooved.
- Surface: black, oiled, painted, or hot-dip galvanized.
- Testing and documentation: the certificate type, and any hydrostatic or non-destructive test the project requires.
Availability of a given size, grade and coating combination is confirmed at quotation, since it depends on the size range and the order quantity. See the welded steel pipe and seamless steel pipe ranges, or compare the two families in seamless vs welded steel pipe.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of ERW pipe?
Electric Resistance Welded pipe. The edges of a formed steel strip are joined by resistance heating and pressure, without filler metal, leaving a longitudinal seam.
Is ERW pipe as strong as seamless pipe?
The two are made to different product standards and are not ranked by the abbreviation. Whether ERW is acceptable depends on the pressure, the service and the test requirements in the specification.
Is ERW pipe welded or seamless?
Welded. ERW always has a longitudinal seam, which is why pipeline specifications that prohibit a seam must call for seamless or submerged-arc welded pipe instead.
