Why Is Steel Galvanized, and When Do You Need It?

Steel is galvanized to protect it from corrosion. The zinc coating corrodes in preference to the steel, so it acts as a barrier and as a sacrificial layer at cut edges and scratches. The result is a much longer service life outdoors or in damp conditions, at a lower cost than stainless steel.

How the protection works

  • Barrier — the zinc coating keeps water and oxygen off the steel surface
  • Sacrificial action — at a cut edge or scratch the zinc corrodes first, protecting the steel nearby
  • Coating life — thicker coatings last longer; coating mass is stated in g/m2 to a standard

When galvanized steel is the right choice

Situation Is galvanizing suitable?
Outdoor structures and frames Yes — the standard choice
Damp or coastal atmospheres Yes — with a heavier coating
Food, chemical or high-temperature service Usually no — stainless or a specific coating is better
Tight-tolerance machined surfaces Care needed — coating adds thickness
Surfaces to be painted Possible — but the system must be compatible

Specifying it properly

Say which galvanizing you want and to which standard, with the coating mass. On sheet and coil that is a continuous coating standard; on fabricated articles it is a hot-dip standard such as EN ISO 1461. The coating determines how long the steel will last, so it belongs in the specification, not in a footnote.

Frequently asked questions

Why is steel galvanized?

To protect it from corrosion. The zinc coating is both a barrier and a sacrificial layer, so cut edges and scratches are still protected, giving a much longer service life outdoors.

When should I not use galvanized steel?

Galvanizing is unsuitable where the coating thickness interferes with a tight tolerance, where the coating cannot tolerate the service temperature, or where the environment demands stainless steel.

How long does galvanized steel last?

Coating life depends on the coating mass or thickness and on the environment. A thicker coating lasts longer, and in aggressive coastal atmospheres a heavier specification is needed.
