Shandong Dayang Channel Steel (tapered flange) in 280 × 84 × 9.5 mm: theoretical weight 35.823 kg/m taken from GB/T 706-2016 Table A.2, plus the full standard size range, steel grades and international equivalents, tolerances, applications, and how a shipment is checked before it leaves.

Product Overview

Shandong Dayang Channel Steel (tapered flange) with a height of 280 mm, a flange width of 84 mm and a web thickness of 9.5 mm weighs 35.823 kg per metre. It is a hot-rolled tapered-flange section, supplied black from the mill or hot-dip galvanized to EN ISO 1461.

The C280 section is the workhorse of frames, purlins and crane rails: the flanges carry the bending moment and the web carries the shear, so the section is efficient in bending about its strong axis. The flange faces are tapered rather than parallel, which is why the correct mating detail (taper washer, or a bevelled plate) matters when a bolted connection is used.

This page gives the full engineering detail for this size: the theoretical weight taken from the Chinese national standard table, the complete 槽钢 range with this size marked, tolerances, steel grades and international equivalents, chemical composition, mechanical properties, standards, applications, and the sourcing problems buyers meet on channel steel (tapered flange) — with how we prevent each one.

Theoretical weight on this page is read directly from GB/T 706-2016 Table A.2 for each size — it is the published standard value, not a formula estimate. Channel sections have rounded corners, and the standard treats the corner radii as reference values rather than as delivery conditions, so a radius-based formula cannot reproduce the table reliably. Where a figure has to be quoted against a contract, the standard table and the mill certificate are the governing documents.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for this section are set by GB/T 706-2016 for Chinese-standard orders and by EN 10056-2 (angles) or EN 10365 (channels and beams) for European orders. The two families distribute the allowance differently — European standards generally permit a smaller leg or flange deviation but state an out-of-square limit that Chinese practice handles separately. Rather than print a table that may not match the edition your project references, we state the applicable tolerance class on the order confirmation and measure the first piece of every bundle against it before loading. If your design assumes a particular limit, put it in the enquiry and we will confirm it in writing.

Steel Grades & International Equivalents

All grades below are supplied with a mill test certificate. The right-hand column shows the material type and the Chinese standard the grade is produced to; the middle columns give the nearest recognised equivalent in other national standards. Exact equivalence for a specific project should be confirmed on the enquiry.

Standards & Documents

Every shipment is accompanied by a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1, traceable to the heat number of the supplied material. On request we also provide a certificate of origin, a packing list with bundle-level weights and dimensions, and container loading photographs.

Typical Applications

Industry / Application Typical use
Purlins and girts The classic cold-formed replacement: a channel spanning between frames with the web vertical.
Crane runway and monorail beams Where the flat back face makes it easy to bolt or weld a rail support.
Trailer and chassis frames Longitudinal members on commercial vehicle bodies.
Frames and machine bases Where a one-sided flat face simplifies mounting equipment.
Bridge and culvert formwork Temporary works where a stiff, easily bolted section is wanted.
Support brackets and posts Guard posts and stand-off brackets where the flat back is the mounting face.

Common Problems Buyers Face — and How We Prevent Them

These are the issues that most often cause claims on steel imports. Each one is controlled in our process before shipment.

Theoretical weight and weighed weight do not agree

Why it happens: Theoretical weight is calculated from nominal dimensions. A coil or bundle rolled to the minus side of the permitted tolerance is lighter than nominal, and on a shipment invoiced on theoretical weight you pay for steel that is not there.

Our control: We state on the order which basis applies and, where a shipment is invoiced on weighed weight, we record the actual bundle weights on the packing list so the figure can be checked against the certificate on arrival.

Tapered flange not allowed for in the connection

Why it happens: The inner face of a hot-rolled tapered-flange channel is not parallel to the web, so a plain nut and washer bears on a slope and the bolt loosens under vibration.

Our control: We state the taper on the order confirmation and can supply taper washers, or supply the cold-formed parallel-flange channel instead where a square bearing face is required.

Channel ordered as a substitute for a cold-formed section

Why it happens: The two are dimensioned differently and are not interchangeable at the same nominal height, so the design checks do not carry over.

Our control: Tell us the governing section properties rather than the nominal size and we will confirm whether a hot-rolled channel satisfies them.

Mixed lengths or mixed sizes in one bundle

Why it happens: Loading errors are common when several sizes ship together and are usually only discovered after the container is opened.

Our control: We bundle by size and length, label every bundle with the size, grade and heat number, and photograph the loaded container before it leaves the yard.

Certificates that do not match the delivered material

Why it happens: A certificate issued for the mill’s production run rather than for the heat actually supplied cannot be traced to what arrives on site — which is exactly what an inspector will test.

Our control: We supply an EN 10204 3.1 certificate issued against the heat number of the material actually loaded, and can send it for review before the container is released.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the weight of a channel calculated?

The theoretical weight is read from the published national standard table, GB/T 706-2016 Table A.2. A channel’s cross-section includes rounded corners and tapered flange faces, and the standard treats the corner radii as reference values rather than delivery conditions, so the table value — not a radius-based formula — is the figure to quote against.

What does ‘tapered flange’ mean and why does it matter?

In a hot-rolled channel the inner face of the flanges is not parallel to the web; the flange is thicker at the junction with the web than at its edge. That is what makes the section efficient, but it also means a plain nut or bolt head does not bear squarely. The fix is a taper washer, or a bevelled plate on a welded connection — tell us which your detail uses and we will supply the matching item.

Can I use a hot-rolled channel instead of a cold-formed section?

Not at the same nominal size. Cold-formed channels are dimensioned differently, have parallel flanges and are usually thinner, so section properties and connection details do not transfer. Send us the governing section properties rather than the nominal size and we will confirm which rolled section satisfies them.

What does Channel Steel (tapered flange) 280 × 84 × 9.5 mm weigh?

Channel Steel (tapered flange) 280 × 84 × 9.5 mm at 280 × 84 × 9.5 mm weighs 35.823 kg per metre, taken from GB/T 706-2016 Table A.2. A 6 m length of this size weighs approximately 214.9 kg and a 12 m length approximately 429.9 kg.

Which steel grades do you supply?

Q235B and Q355B to GB/T 1591, and SS400 to JIS G3101. For European or American specifications the usual counterparts are S235JR / S355JR and ASTM A36 / A572 Gr. 50, but we confirm equivalence against your project specification rather than by grade name.

Is the channel available galvanized?

Yes, hot-dip galvanized to EN ISO 1461 with the coating mass stated in writing on the order. Galvanizing adds roughly 3–6 % to the weighed mass depending on section thickness, and on theoretical-weight orders that coating is not included in the figure.

What lengths do you supply?

6 m as standard, 12 m on request, and cut-to-length against a cutting list. Long lengths are lifted with a spreader beam and braced in the container so that web straightness is preserved in transit.

How straight is the delivered material?

Straightness and web flatness are checked against the standard before loading and the result recorded. If your fabrication assumes a tighter straightness limit than the standard, state it on the enquiry so it can be made a condition of the order rather than a hope.

What is the minimum order quantity?

It depends on the size and on what else can be consolidated into the same container. Send the size, grade, length, quantity and destination port and we will quote a loading plan.

Can you supply the mill test certificate before shipment?

Yes. An EN 10204 3.1 certificate traceable to the supplied heat can be issued for review before the container is released.
