Hot-Dip Galvanized Square & Rectangular Tube
Hot-dip galvanized square and rectangular tube, inside and out, with a zinc coating of 30 to 700 g/m², for greenhouse frames, fencing, solar racking and handrails. Supplied 20×20 mm to 400×400 mm with 1.0 mm to 20 mm walls, cut to length or punched before dipping.
Product Overview
Galvanized square tube is cold-formed hollow section that has been immersed in molten zinc after fabrication, so the coating covers the outside faces, the inside bore and the cut ends. Because the bore of a closed section is almost impossible to paint or inspect after installation, hot-dip galvanizing is the only practical way to protect the inside of a tube from the corrosion that starts as condensation or as a film of moisture trapped during transit.
The coating weight is specified in grams per square metre, total on both surfaces, and chosen against the service environment: 30 to 100 g/m² for dry indoor work, 180 to 275 g/m² for general outdoor exposure, 350 to 500 g/m² for coastal and industrial atmospheres, and up to 700 g/m² for severe marine or chemical conditions. As a working guide, 100 g/m² corresponds to roughly 7 µm of coating on each face.
Sections run from 20×20 mm up to 400×400 mm square with rectangular sizes to 400 mm on the long side, in wall thicknesses from 1.0 mm to 20 mm. Cutting, mitring, punching and drilling are carried out before dipping, so the finished member arrives fully coated and ready to erect.

Tolerances
Zinc coating to GB/T 13912, ISO 1461, ASTM A123 and JIS H8641, quoted as coating mass in g/m² total on both surfaces and typically giving about 7 µm of coating per 100 g/m². Base section dimensions, squareness and wall thickness follow GB/T 6728. Coating mass is tested on a sample basis per lot and the report accompanies the shipment.

Common Problems Buyers Face — and How We Prevent Them
These are the issues that most often cause claims on steel imports. Each one is controlled in our process before shipment.
White rust on the galvanized surface when the container is opened
Why it happens: Zinc reacts with moisture when air cannot circulate inside a tightly strapped bundle, forming wet-storage stain. It is a surface reaction rather than a loss of coating, but it looks like a defect to a receiving inspector.
Our control: Bundles are packed with spacers so air can move, shipped dry, and given VCI paper for long or humid routes. If appearance matters on exposed work, ask for a passivation treatment, which hinders wet-storage stain during transit without changing the coating weight.
Coating looks thin or bare inside the tube
Why it happens: The bore of a closed section is difficult for molten zinc to reach and drain, so dipping practice strongly affects internal coating quality, and a visual check from outside shows nothing.
Our control: Sections are dipped with the bore open and oriented so the zinc flows and drains, and internal coating is checked on cut samples per lot. Where your specification demands a defined internal coating, tell us and we will confirm the dipping method and the coating mass we can guarantee inside.
The tube distorts during galvanizing
Why it happens: The zinc bath is around 450 degrees C, which relieves forming stresses, so thin-wall and long members can bow or twist during the dip.
Our control: For distortion-sensitive members we check straightness after dipping and use jigs where the shape must be held. For a long slender member, a slightly thicker wall or a different section is often the cheaper solution, and we will say so at the enquiry stage rather than after dipping.
Coating damaged at the sling points and cut ends on arrival
Why it happens: Galvanized tube is handled with chains and hooks at the port, and the coating is soft relative to the steel underneath, so it marks at every point of contact.
Our control: Bundles are fitted with edge protection and slings are specified for coated material, and cut-to-length members are packed so the coated ends are protected. Touch-up material for minor handling marks is supplied with the order.
Welding on site burns the coating away
Why it happens: Welding a galvanized member destroys the zinc locally and releases zinc fume, so the joint becomes the first place to rust and the operation needs ventilation.
Our control: Order the member cut, mitred and punched before galvanizing so the finished part needs no site welding. Where welding is unavoidable, the weld zone should be cleaned and repaired with zinc-rich paint, and welders should work with proper fume extraction on galvanized material.

Our Supply & Manufacturing Advantages
- Coating inside and out — Hot-dip galvanizing coats the bore and the cut ends of the section, which paint cannot reach, so the closed profile does not corrode from the inside.
- Coating weight to your specification — 30 to 700 g/m² quoted on the enquiry, matched to the atmosphere the structure will stand in and tested before shipment.
- Processed before dipping — Cut to length, mitred and punched before galvanizing, so the member arrives fully coated with no bare steel to repair.
- Strength retained — The coating is metallurgically bonded and does not change the mechanical properties of the base section, and the mill certificate for the tube is issued with the order.
- Coating documentation — Coating mass test report for each lot, plus the EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate for the base hollow section.
- Packing that protects the coating — Spacers, edge protection and dry packing as standard, so the coating survives handling, container loading and the sea voyage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What coating weight should I specify for a coastal or solar project?
For a ground-mount solar project in a temperate inland location, 275 g/m² is the usual specification and corresponds to roughly 20 µm on each face. For a coastal site within a few kilometres of salt water we recommend 350 to 500 g/m², and for direct salt spray or marine exposure 600 to 700 g/m². Tell us the site conditions and the design life and we will nominate the figure.
Can galvanized square tube be welded?
Yes, but the zinc coating at the joint is destroyed by the arc and must be repaired afterwards with zinc-rich paint, and the zinc fume must be extracted because it is hazardous if inhaled. The better practice is to cut, drill and punch the member before galvanizing so the finished part needs no site welding at all.
Is the inside of the tube galvanized as well?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanizing coats all surfaces that molten zinc can reach, which includes the bore of the tube and the cut ends, provided the section is dipped with the bore open and properly drained. We confirm the dipping method and can report the internal coating mass on cut samples when the specification requires it.
Does the galvanized coating comply with ASTM A123?
Yes. The coating is produced and tested to meet ASTM A123 as well as GB/T 13912 and ISO 1461. If your project references ASTM A123 explicitly, state it on the enquiry and the coating inspection and test report will be carried out against that standard.
What is the equivalent of S235 or S355 galvanized tube?
Q235B is the closest Chinese equivalent to S235JR and is the base grade normally galvanized for the European market, while Q355B corresponds to S355JR and can be supplied for higher-strength structures. The base grade appears on the mill certificate and the coating weight appears on the coating report, so both parts of the specification are documented separately.
Who supplies hot-dip galvanized square tube from China?
We do. Dayang supplies galvanized square and rectangular tube to greenhouse builders, fencing manufacturers, solar racking suppliers and steel stockists worldwide, cut and punched to drawing where required, with the coating weight stated in grams per square metre and tested before shipment.
Do you have a minimum order quantity?
No strict minimum and one ton can ship for a trial or a small project. Because galvanizing is a batch process, very small quantities of an unusual coating weight may be grouped with other work, and we will say so at the quotation stage if it affects the price or the lead time.
What documents come with a galvanized tube shipment?
An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate for the base hollow section and a coating mass test report, plus the commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV or another nominated agency can be arranged before loading.
How is the tube packed so the coating is not damaged?
Bundles are square-stacked and steel-strapped with spacers so air can circulate, and edge protection is fitted at the points where slings will bear. Cut-to-length, mitred and punched members are packed in the sequence of your fabrication list where the order allows.
