Galvanized vs Mild Steel: Which Should You Choose?
Mild steel and galvanized steel are the same base material; the difference is the zinc coating. Choose mild (black) steel where the surface will be painted, oiled or protected another way, or where no corrosion resistance is needed. Choose galvanized where the steel will be exposed to weather or moisture and you want the protection built into the product.
The practical comparison
| Factor | Mild (black) steel | Galvanized steel |
|---|---|---|
| Base material | Carbon steel | The same carbon steel, plus a zinc coating |
| Corrosion resistance | None without a coating | Good to excellent, depending on coating mass |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher, by the cost of the coating |
| Welding and fabrication | Straightforward | Coating is damaged at welds and cut edges and must be repaired |
| Painting | Good substrate | Possible, but needs a compatible system and surface preparation |
| Best for | Indoor structures, machined parts, painted assemblies | Outdoor frames, fencing, handrails, damp or coastal service |
How the protection works
Zinc corrodes in preference to steel, so the coating is both a barrier and a sacrificial layer that keeps protecting at cut edges and scratches. Coating life rises with coating mass, which is why the specification states the coating in g/m2 or in microns rather than just saying “galvanized”.
How to decide
- Will the steel see weather or moisture? If not, mild steel is usually enough
- Can the surface be painted or oiled instead? If yes, mild steel may be cheaper overall
- Will the part be welded heavily? Then repair of the coating must be planned
- Is the environment aggressive, such as coastal? Then specify a heavier coating

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between galvanized and mild steel?
They share the same carbon steel base. Galvanized steel carries a zinc coating that protects it from corrosion; mild steel does not, and needs painting, oiling or another form of protection.
Is galvanized steel stronger than mild steel?
No. The coating does not add meaningful structural strength. Strength comes from the grade and the section, and the steel under the coating is the same mild steel.
Can galvanized steel be welded?
Yes, but the zinc coating is damaged at the weld and the affected zone must be cleaned and repaired with a suitable zinc-rich coating to restore protection.
